The IMO records 65 incidents and 17 seafarer fatalities

11 Aug 2026

MaritimeHumanitarian

The International Maritime Organization's incident reporting records 65 confirmed incidents and 17 confirmed seafarer fatalities in the Strait of Hormuz and the wider Middle East. An IMO-coordinated evacuation begun in June had reduced the number of stranded crews from roughly 20,000 in late April to about 6,000 aboard some 500 ships by mid-July.

Why it mattersThe IMO tally is the only deduplicated count available and is what this module publishes rather than summing reported incidents itself. The April and August figures differ in geographic scope and are not a single series.
