British withdrawal, the UAE federation, and the seizure of three islands

1971Key event

PoliticalTerritorial change

Britain withdraws from its commitments east of Suez, the United Arab Emirates federates from seven emirates, and Iran takes control of Abu Musa and the Greater and Lesser Tunbs in the same period.

Why it mattersThe modern Gulf state system and its oldest live dispute date from the same months. The islands question has outlasted the 1979 revolution, the Iran–Iraq war, the 2016 rupture in relations and the 2026 war, which is why this module treats the region as a structure rather than as a consequence of the present conflict.
