A decree of 26 February 2024, effective 1 March, re-created the Moscow and Leningrad military districts out of the Western Military District, with the Leningrad district’s stated territory running from Karelia to Kaliningrad.
The Northern Fleet’s own military-district status ended on the same date and fleet operational subordination passed to the Navy’s main command. A naval infantry formation at Baltiysk was announced as expanded to divisional status in December 2025; the designation reported for it is not publicly confirmed.
