- STRUCTURE. Three standing army corps cover northern, southern and central Taiwan; four defence commands cover the eastern coastal strip and the three administered offshore island groups; and one functional command holds army aviation and special operations at the same level as the corps. Five of those eight also carry a numbered theatre-of-operations designation from the reorganisation the Ministry of National Defense confirmed for 1 January 2022, under which the corps or defence-command headquarters becomes a joint theatre command in a contingency, directing assigned naval and air elements as well as its own. The theatre is a role rather than a second organisation, which is why the atlas records it on each command instead of building a parallel layer. Kinmen and Matsu sit outside the theatre scheme, as does the aviation and special-forces command. Historically the largest service and the institutional core of the Nationalist military, the army has contracted substantially since the Cold War as conscription shortened and the mission narrowed. The restoration of one-year conscription from 2024, alongside reserve-force reform, has made it the focus of Taiwan's most consequential and least resolved defence debate: whether a mobilisation system can be built that is credible rather than nominal.
- Points forts
- Defends known terrain with interior lines and a mountainous interior; substantial nominal reserve manpower; and a reform programme with political attention and funding behind it.
- Limites
- Reserve training quality and mobilisation credibility are questioned by Taiwanese commentators and outside analysts alike, and survey evidence on public preparedness is modest. Recruitment and retention for the volunteer component are persistent problems. This module reports the reform debate and publishes nothing about unit locations, strengths or readiness.

Événements clés
Rappels de réservistes harmonisés à quatorze jours
Le ministère taïwanais de la Défense confirme en juin 2026 que toutes les convocations d’instruction de mobilisation sont normalisées à quatorze jours, remplaçant le précédent programme de cinq à sept jours et supprimant le mécanisme de double crédit qui atténuait le format de quatorze jours depuis son expérimentation en 2022. Le ministère fait état d’un taux de correspondance de 93 pour cent pour la politique de réaffectation des réservistes à leur poste d’origine, ce qui permet une instruction en groupes fixes, et annonce son intention de développer l’entraînement en conditions réalistes et de réviser la réglementation concernant les réservistes femmes. La mobilisation des réserves est administrée par l’All-Out Defense Mobilization Agency, créée le 1 janvier 2022 par la fusion du bureau de la mobilisation et de l’Armed Forces Reserve Command.
