Syrian transitional government — Israël et la Syrie

Synthèse

On 8 December 2024 the IDF moved into the buffer zone and beyond it and, over the following weeks, struck much of the former state's military assets across the country. The transitional government has stated it seeks no conflict with Israel and has excluded Iranian-linked forces, commitments reported to anchor both the Israel file and the United States sanctions certifications. US-mediated security negotiations from January 2026 were reported near-complete around phased withdrawal toward the 1974 lines with positions retained on the Syrian Hermon; no text has been signed. In parallel Israel struck Damascus during the July 2025 Sweida crisis and the airfields associated with Turkish plans in April 2025 and August 2026, and on 8 September 2026 the UN commission of inquiry described the southern presence as increasingly sustained and entrenched; the following day the prime minister stood on the Hermon and the defence minister said Israel would not leave the security zones. Damascus condemned the visit and raised it at the Security Council. The two states have no diplomatic relations.

Pourquoi c’est important

Every southern file in the module — Sweida, the Damascus corps' deployment, the Quneitra and Dara'a countryside, the airfield strikes in the north — runs through this relationship, and it is the one bilateral file in which the transitional government negotiates from no military position at all.
