- Nationwide with heavily contested reach. The state holds Ouagadougou, the regional capitals and the main axes; large rural areas across the Sahel, Nord, Centre-Nord and Est regions are outside routine administration, and several towns — Djibo above all — have been supplied by air rather than by road for years.
- Historique notable
- The army has been the country's decisive political institution since 2022, when Lieutenant-Colonel Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba removed the elected president in January and Captain Ibrahim Traoré removed Damiba in September. Since then the officer corps has been the government. Its declared answer to the insurgency has been "total war": mass mobilisation through the Volunteers for the Defence of the Homeland alongside conventional forces, and a rapid enlargement of the regular army — recruitment competitions for about 12,000 personnel were launched on 22 April 2026, and 5,000 volunteers were announced for integration into the armed forces on 1 June. The government also announces frequent coup attempts against itself, including one reported as thwarted on 3 January 2026 and described as the twenty-third such plot since 2022. That tally is the government's own and is not independently verifiable, but the pattern of announcements is itself evidence about cohesion inside the institution.
- Points forts
- Very large mobilisable manpower relative to the country's size, through both regular recruitment and the volunteer force; political primacy, with no civilian institution able to constrain it; a partner relationship with Russia that carries no governance conditions.
- Limites
- Overstretch across most of the national territory, and a supply problem it has not solved: besieged towns have depended on humanitarian airlift and occasional armoured convoys since 2022, and convoys have repeatedly been ambushed with heavy losses. Its own auxiliary force carries a documented record of abuses that recruits for the insurgency. And the announced coup attempts point at a cohesion problem in the institution the transition rests on.

Le Burkina Faso annonce un complot déjoué et désigne un ancien président de transition
Le ministre de la Sécurité, Mahamadou Sana, a annoncé le 6 janvier 2026 que les autorités avaient déjoué un complot, prévu pour le week-end précédent, qui selon lui comportait l’assassinat ciblé de responsables militaires et civils, dont le président de la transition, la destruction de la base de lancement de drones du pays et un financement venu de Côte d’Ivoire ; l’ancien président de la transition Paul-Henri Damiba a été désigné comme son organisateur et la découverte a été attribuée à une vidéo divulguée des conjurés. Le ministre de la Défense a indiqué que les enquêtes se poursuivaient et que plusieurs arrestations avaient eu lieu, sans en préciser le nombre. C’est le quatrième complot annoncé par les autorités depuis septembre 2022 — après septembre 2023, janvier 2024 et avril 2025 — et, comme pour chacun d’eux, il n’existe aucun compte rendu indépendant de ce qui était prévu.
