- Nationwide, organised in territorial brigades; in the north and east the brigades are the state's forward presence. Nothing about strength beyond the public order of magnitude, and nothing about dispositions, is authored.
- Historique notable
- A French-pattern gendarmerie since independence, under the defence ministry and answering to the interior ministry for policing. The war since 2015 turned its territorial brigades from police posts into garrisons: in most of the districts JNIM contests, the gendarmerie brigade is the state unit on the ground, and when the 2020 law created the Volunteers for the Defence of the Homeland it was the local brigade that raised and directed them. That makes the gendarmerie the hinge of the "total war" model — the point where a conventional force and a mass civilian mobilisation meet — and the place where the VDP's documented conduct problems become the state's.
- Points forts
- Presence in districts the army does not hold, a legal command relationship with the auxiliaries, and the road-security role that the import corridors depend on.
- Limites
- Roughly five thousand personnel for a country under siege in half its territory; brigades that are overrun before they are relieved; and a command over the VDP that human-rights reporting describes as nominal in the districts where the auxiliaries' conduct is worst.
