- Nationwide with heavily contested reach; the army holds the regional capitals and the main axes, supplies besieged towns by convoy and air, and operates alongside the volunteer auxiliaries in the Sahel, Nord, Centre-Nord and Est regions.
- Historique notable
- The Burkinabè army was the country's decisive political institution twice in 2022, and since then its officer corps has been the government. Its declared answer to the insurgency has been enlargement and decentralisation: recruitment competitions for about 12,000 personnel launched in April 2026, a draft law for a 100,000-strong reserve adopted the same month, an expanded set of military regions to shorten responsiveness in rural zones, and — above all — the rapid-intervention battalions, better equipped than the rest of the force and tasked with mobile operations against the armed groups, whose number rose from six to twenty-eight by 2025. The army's convoys to the besieged towns have been ambushed repeatedly with heavy losses, and its conduct, together with the auxiliaries', is documented by human-rights organisations as a driver of the insurgency's recruitment.

L’encerclement de Djibo commence
Des forces djihadistes, principalement Ansarul Islam et le JNIM, ont encerclé Djibo, chef-lieu de la province du Soum dans le nord du Burkina Faso, détruisant les infrastructures, minant les routes et tendant des embuscades aux convois de ravitaillement. Les populations environnantes ont été déplacées de force vers la ville, dont la population est passée d’environ 60,000 habitants à entre 200,000 et 300,000, puis à environ 370,000 en décembre 2022. À partir de mai 2022 environ, le ravitaillement a dépendu principalement d’un pont aérien humanitaire.
Le JNIM submerge la base militaire de Djibo et entre dans Diapaga
Le JNIM a attaqué Djibo, chef-lieu du Soum encerclé depuis 2022, a submergé et rasé sa base militaire puis s’est retiré ; des troupes y ont ensuite été ramenées par air. Le groupe a revendiqué quelque 200 soldats tués, un chiffre qu’aucune autre partie n’a confirmé, et des chercheurs en droits humains ont ensuite documenté des exécutions de civils dans la ville. L’opération a frappé plusieurs autres positions le même jour et, en moins d’une journée, des combattants du JNIM sont entrés dans Diapaga, dans l’est, attaquant le camp et libérant des détenus de la prison de la ville avant de repartir.
