Broad area of activity
Kyushu and the Nansei (Ryukyu) islands, extending toward Taiwan
Notable history
The regional army command responsible for the part of Japan that matters to this module. The Ryukyu chain runs southwest from Kyushu to within about a hundred kilometres of Taiwan, and the channels through it — the Miyako Strait above all — are the routes PLA naval and air units use to reach the Pacific, which Japan publicly reports each time. The Western Army is therefore the Japanese organisation that observes the eastern half of the pressure system at first hand, and the one that has absorbed most of the new formations raised for southwestern defence. Japan's amphibious rapid deployment capability, built for retaking or reinforcing islands, also sits within this command's area.
Strengths
Positioned on the geography that matters, with island-defence and amphibious capabilities built for it, and a national surveillance system that publishes what transits the channels.
Limitations
Defending a chain of small islands means dispersing across many of them and depending on maritime and air lines the command does not control. Whether any of it is used in a Taiwan contingency is a legal and political question decided in Tokyo. Vigil publishes no basing, unit locations, strengths or readiness, and records Japanese reporting of transits without treating it as an independent measurement.
Related locations
Miyako Strait: Broad area association only — the strait lies within the command's regional area of responsibility. No garrison, facility or unit location is recorded anywhere in this module.
