What happened

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi indicates that a Chinese armed attack or blockade of Taiwan could constitute a situation permitting a Japanese military response. Beijing reacts with a sustained campaign of economic and informational pressure on Japan that continues into 2026.

Significant in two directions. It is the most explicit modern Japanese statement linking Taiwan to Japan's own defence, and it triggered a demonstration that economic coercion is applied to third countries over Taiwan-related positions, not only to Taiwan. Whether other states read that as deterrent or as a cost of alignment is one of the module's open questions.
