What happened
The first two single-seat F-16 Block 70 aircraft of the 66 Taiwan ordered in 2019 landed at Chihhang Air Base in Taitung on 2 October 2026, about seven weeks after leaving the United States on 17 August and staging through Hawaii and Guam. The Air Force announced the arrival and said acceptance and conversion training follow on plan, with later deliveries set against milestones agreed with the US programme office; the defence minister said more than two aircraft would be delivered this year. President Lai Ching-te called the delivery a milestone for air defence.
Vigil records this because it is the second case on this module's record to move between states on a government's own report, after the Abrams tanks in April, and the first under the 2019 fighter sale, which had been due to complete by the end of 2026. It is delivery, not capability: acceptance, conversion training and integration with the 7th Tactical Fighter Wing come next, and no schedule for the remaining aircraft has been published. The Air Force's release describes 63 aircraft on the US production line; the record does not reconcile that figure with the 66 ordered. The delivery is a separate case from the package Taipei is still waiting on, which remains under review in Washington.
