The United States completes its withdrawal

February – April 2026

What happened

Following January strikes against ISIS after a deadly ambush, and with the integration agreement in place, US forces draw down from February and hand over their last major base to the Syrian government on 16 April 2026 — ending more than a decade of military presence that began with the anti-ISIS campaign in 2015.

The withdrawal removed the northeast's external guarantor and completed the transition's sovereignty in one stroke — leaving counter-ISIS performance, and the integration agreement's durability, to Syrian institutions under US certification watch.
