What happened

Magnitude 7.8 and 7.5 earthquakes devastate southern Türkiye and northwest Syria; thousands die on the Syrian side, concentrated in already-displaced communities of the opposition-held northwest, where cross-border aid politics slow the response.

The earthquakes compounded the northwest's layered displacement and exposed the aid system's dependence on contested border crossings — and briefly accelerated the Assad government's regional rehabilitation.
