JNIM attacks seven towns in western and central Mali in one morning — Key Events — Sahel

What happened

JNIM struck army and security positions at Kayes, Nioro du Sahel, Diboli on the Senegalese border, Gogui on the Mauritanian border, Sandaré, Niono and Molodo in a coordinated operation. The army said every attack was repelled and more than eighty attackers killed; JNIM claimed control of barracks. Neither account was independently verified. JNIM then declared a blockade of Kayes and Nioro.

The first JNIM attack on a regional capital, and the opening of the western campaign: the border posts struck sit on the Dakar corridor that carries much of Mali's fuel, and the blockade that followed was the rehearsal for the national fuel blockade of September.
