Islamic State Sahel overruns the base at Banibangou — Key Events — Sahel

What happened

Islamic State Sahel fighters overran the army base at Banibangou in northern Tillabéri, held the town for hours, looted and burned it and withdrew toward Mali. Niger's defence ministry acknowledged 34 soldiers killed; later counts were higher. The group returned a year later and overran the base again on 17 June 2026, the same day it took the camp at Inates.

The clearest demonstration in western Niger of the pattern this module records across the region: an armed group that can overrun a garrison and leave. It is also where the Islamic State Sahel activity area drawn over eastern Mali continues into Niger.
