Hungary's membership of NATO, in force since 1999-03-12. Membership is a treaty fact rather than an assessment of alignment, and it is what makes the Article 5 commitment apply to this state's territory. Hungary hosts a battlegroup for which it is itself the framework nation, and a multinational division headquarters.

Summary

Acceded on 12 March 1999 in the first post-Cold-War enlargement, together with Czechia, Hungary and Poland. Membership carries the mutual-defence commitment of Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty, under which an armed attack against one ally is treated as an attack against them all. Hungary hosts a battlegroup for which it is itself the framework nation, and a multinational division headquarters. This record states the membership and its date; it says nothing about how much this state spends, what it contributes, or how reliable any party considers it — none of which membership establishes.

Why it matters

The membership set is the backbone of this module: every forward deployment, every command arrangement and every reinforcement plan in the theatre exists because of who is inside this treaty and who is not. Reading the accession dates in order also explains the theatre's shape — the states that joined in 1999 and 2004 are the ones the forward presence now sits in, and the two newest accessions closed the Baltic and the northern land border.
