Hungary's membership of NATO, in force since 1999-03-12. Membership is a treaty fact rather than an assessment of alignment, and it is what makes the Article 5 commitment apply to this state's territory. Hungary hosts a battlegroup for which it is itself the framework nation, and a multinational division headquarters.
NATO and the eastern flank has as a member Hungary and the eastern flank. A directional arrangement: the two parties do not hold the same position in it. Authored once and read from both ends.
Acceded on 12 March 1999 in the first post-Cold-War enlargement, together with Czechia, Hungary and Poland. Membership carries the mutual-defence commitment of Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty, under which an armed attack against one ally is treated as an attack against them all. Hungary hosts a battlegroup for which it is itself the framework nation, and a multinational division headquarters. This record states the membership and its date; it says nothing about how much this state spends, what it contributes, or how reliable any party considers it — none of which membership establishes.
- Hungary is host and framework nation of its own battlegroup; which other allies contribute to it is not published on the NATO page read.
- Hungary’s divergence from allied positions on Ukraine is a political question recorded, where it is recorded at all, on the actor record; membership is a treaty fact and this record does not grade it.
