ما هذه الأرض
The Gulf is a shallow, enclosed sea whose only exit is the Strait of Hormuz, a bend of water shared by Iran and Oman that opens onto the Gulf of Oman and the Indian Ocean. Every terminal inside it depends on that exit, and the two bypass pipelines exist to reach the water beyond it.

أين تتركز الحركة
The only exit. Physical, commercial and legal access have moved independently through the war and the module tracks each.
The water immediately outside the strait, where traffic disperses and where the Fujairah and Jask outlets sit.
Iran's own dependence on the funnel: the terminal that handles most of its crude lies deep inside the enclosed sea.
The largest Saudi export terminal, inside the funnel; the reason the east–west pipeline exists.
The one outlet on the Arabian shore that reaches the open ocean without transiting the strait.
Iran's outlet outside the strait, built to bypass it and reported to have carried a small fraction of its design capacity.
الطابع المادي
- التضاريس الغالبة
- An enclosed sea roughly a thousand kilometres long and, for most of its length, shallow — deeper on the Iranian side, shoaling toward the Arabian shore, with islands, reefs and the Qatar peninsula narrowing the southern half. At its mouth the strait bends around the Musandam peninsula between Iran and Oman; beyond it the Gulf of Oman deepens quickly toward the open Arabian Sea. Almost every export terminal in the system — Kharg, Ras Tanura, Ras Laffan, Mina al-Ahmadi, Sitra, Ruwais — lies inside the enclosed sea; Fujairah, Jask, Mina al-Fahal, Duqm and Salalah lie outside it.
- انعكاسات على الحركة
- The geography is a funnel. Traffic from every Gulf terminal converges on one strait whose navigable width is a fraction of its nominal one, moves through it under an internationally recognised traffic separation scheme in Omani and Iranian waters, and disperses into deep water beyond. That is why physical, commercial and legal access are tracked apart in this module: the strait can be physically passable and commercially closed at once, which is the state it has been in since March 2026. Inside the Gulf, shallow water and a long coastline on both shores put every terminal within reach of small craft, missiles and drones launched from land.
- القيود الموسمية
- The shamal — the north-westerly wind of early summer and winter — raises seas and dust across the northern Gulf and can suspend loading at exposed terminals for days. Summer heat and humidity are extreme on both shores and govern power and water demand, which is the module's power-and-water chain. The monsoon affects the Arabian Sea approaches to Duqm and Salalah rather than the enclosed sea.
- المياه والحواجز الطبيعية
- The strait is the barrier. Its two navigable lanes and the separation zone between them lie largely in Omani territorial water, with Iranian islands — Qeshm, Larak, Hormuz, and the three islands disputed with the UAE — on the northern side of the approach. The Musandam peninsula, an Omani exclave, is the southern shore. There is no second exit; the bypass pipelines to Yanbu and Fujairah are the region's only routes to water outside the funnel, and the module's logistics records carry their limits.
- التحضّر والتجمعات السكنية
- The Arabian shore is a chain of capitals and industrial cities within a few kilometres of the water — Kuwait City, Dammam and the Eastern Province, Manama, Doha, Abu Dhabi, Dubai — with desalination and power plants on the same coast; the Iranian shore is sparser, with Bandar Abbas the one large city at the strait and Bushehr and Asaluyeh the industrial anchors. Civilian exposure to any maritime disruption is therefore immediate on the Arabian side, where water itself comes from the sea.
الأهمية العملياتية العامة
Three effects. First, the funnel makes the whole system's exports depend on a condition no single state controls — since March 2026 that condition has been the insurance market's, not any navy's. Second, the enclosed sea puts every terminal on both shores within reach of the other shore, which is why a war between Iran and the United States became, within days, a war on Gulf energy infrastructure. Third, the water outside the strait is the only place a bypass can end, and there are two such outlets on the Arabian side and one on the Iranian; whether they are mitigation or replacement is the question the logistics records answer, and the answer is mitigation.
مرصود
The strait has remained physically passable through the war; the IMO's position since April 2026 is that there is no safe transit anywhere in it; commercial transits fell by more than 80 per cent after war-risk cover was withdrawn in March 2026 and were recorded at seven on 9 September. Iran's Persian Gulf Strait Authority, announced in May, is rejected by Oman and the six Gulf states.
بحسب التقييم
The geography has not changed and will not; what the war changed is which of the three accesses governs. Vigil's reading is that the commercial access is the binding one and will remain so until cover is written on terms charterers accept, whatever the legal régime the riparians eventually agree.

ما لا يزال مجهولًا
- The pre-war war-risk premium series is not established, so no multiple or percentage is published for the commercial closure.
- Whether any hazard has been laid or cleared in the strait is not published here and is not known to Vigil.
