概要
Southern MD army re-formed in 2017 at Novocherkassk, on the Donbas border, around a division re-established the year before; closely associated with the Donetsk axis since 2022, from the Mariupol operation to the Donetsk-city sectors, and the first Russian parent of the former separatist corps after the 2022 annexations.

- 重要歷史
- A Soviet army with a Stalingrad lineage, disbanded in 1998 and re-formed in 2017 at Novocherkassk as the field army for the Donbas border, around a motor-rifle division re-established there in 2016 — a structural signal, five years before the invasion, of where Russia expected to fight. In 2022 it was the army most associated with the Donetsk axis, including the Mariupol operation, and after the September annexations the two former separatist corps were folded under its structures, which made it briefly the largest army in the theatre; the corps were reported detached as armies of their own in 2024. It has held the Donetsk-city sectors since.
