- Elevated to a full service in the 2015 reforms from the former Second Artillery Corps, the Rocket Force holds China's land-based conventional and nuclear missile inventories. It is central to most published assessments of the regional military balance, and it was also the focus of the most prominent of the corruption investigations that removed senior PLA officers from 2023 onward — a publicly documented fact whose implications for the force's actual effectiveness are genuinely unknown.

- Untested in conflict; publicly reported corruption investigations reaching senior levels raise questions about readiness and procurement quality that outside analysts cannot resolve. Vigil describes this capability at broad category level only — no inventories, locations, ranges-to-target or employment concepts are published here. WHY THE ATLAS STOPS AT THE SERVICE, stated rather than left as an absence. The Rocket Force is organised into numbered bases with geographic areas of responsibility, and open literature — including US government reporting — names them and describes which direction each is associated with. Publishing that layer would produce, on a site about the Taiwan Strait, a record identifying the missile organisation associated with Taiwan. However carefully such a record were worded, its function for a reader would be targeting-adjacent rather than structural, and no amount of caveat changes what it is. The only subordinate record here is therefore the historical predecessor branch, which carries a change of institutional standing in 2015 and no operational content of any kind.
