Two things about this were established on the day and one has been settled since. Established: soldiers from the units taking the heaviest losses in the western theatre turned on the capital, which makes battlefield attrition an internal political fact rather than only a military one; and the base they attacked is where Russia's force and the confederation's joint command both sit. Settled, by Moscow's own account within a day: Russian personnel did act, and did so — the ambassador says — because the base command asked them to. That is the second official Russian acknowledgement of an engagement in this module after the January airport attack, and it dissolves the distinction the first version of this record drew between defending its own base and choosing a side. A force attacked at its base, asked by that base's command to help, and thanked by the army's chief of staff afterwards, has done both at once. What the statement does not establish is whether Africa Corps would act in an internal contest away from its own base, or in Mali or Burkina Faso; that is now the question the Analytical Note on the Wagner–Africa Corps transition carries forward.
