Mali's continuing dependence on ECOWAS states for the overland routes that carry its imports, sustained after the January 2025 withdrawal because the bloc kept the free trade zone in place. It is the exposure JNIM's declared fuel blockade has attacked since September 2025.

ECOWAS relied on economically by Mali — Transitional Authorities. A directional arrangement: the two parties do not hold the same position in it. Authored once and read from both ends.

Synthèse

Mali left ECOWAS in January 2025 and did not leave its geography. Malian imports still cross ECOWAS ports, and the bloc said it would keep the free trade zone in place until further notice, so the trade continues without the membership that used to govern it. Three overland routes supply the entire fuel demand of a landlocked state, and since September 2025 they have been the target of a declared blockade — which is the point at which a commercial dependence became a security one. The module's logistics record holds the routes, the nodes and the disruption history; what this record states is that the dependence survived the institutional rupture intact, and that Mali now carries it without a vote on the rules governing the market it runs through.

Pourquoi c’est important

It is the structural answer to whether the ECOWAS exit cost anything. The answer is that it cost institutional standing and not trade — and that the retained trade is the single most attackable thing about the Malian state, which an insurgency identified and acted on within eight months of the exit.

Systèmes dont elle dépend

Fiches logistiques canoniques. Elles portent les corridors, les nœuds, la dépendance et l’historique des perturbations sur lesquels repose cette relation, et qu’elle ne reformule pas.

Ce qui reste inconnu

  • Vigil publishes no trade volumes, corridor throughput or fuel-import figures in this record. The mechanics and the disruption history are held in the logistics record and are not restated here.
  • ECOWAS has kept the free trade zone in place "until further notice"; no source establishes what would end that, or on what notice.
  • `validFrom` is the January 2025 withdrawal, from which this record dates the dependence as a post-membership condition. The underlying corridor geography is older and belongs to the logistics record.
