Zusammenfassung

Mali left ECOWAS in January 2025 and did not leave its geography. Malian imports still cross ECOWAS ports, and the bloc said it would keep the free trade zone in place until further notice, so the trade continues without the membership that used to govern it. Three overland routes supply the entire fuel demand of a landlocked state, and since September 2025 they have been the target of a declared blockade — which is the point at which a commercial dependence became a security one. Warum es wichtig ist

It is the structural answer to whether the ECOWAS exit cost anything. The answer is that it cost institutional standing and not trade — and that the retained trade is the single most attackable thing about the Malian state, which an insurgency identified and acted on within eight months of the exit.
