Battlefield role

Medium-range point and area defence, identified in specialist assessment alongside IRIS-T as one of the two principal systems carrying Ukraine's cruise-missile defence. Its distinguishing feature is that it fires air-to-air missiles from the ground, which ties its resupply to a munition stream shared with combat aircraft rather than to a dedicated surface-to-air production line.

Strengths

Proven against cruise missiles and drones, and drawing on a widely produced missile family rather than a system-specific interceptor.

Limitations

Not an anti-ballistic system. Sharing a missile family with fighter aircraft is a supply advantage and a supply exposure at once, because the same rounds are wanted for air-to-air use. As with every donated layer, the binding variable is the interceptor resupply rate rather than the number of launchers, and that rate is not published.

Documented conflict use

In documented Ukrainian service since 2022 and consistently described in specialist assessment as a core part of the medium-range layer. No primary source separating delivered systems from planned or pledged systems was identified for NASAMS, and the totals appearing in reporting are therefore not reproduced here. What can be said is that the system is in service; how many are operational is not established.
