Notable history

Formed on 19 April 2024 from the Strategic Support Force's Space Systems Department, which had held the PLA's launch, telemetry, tracking and satellite operations since 2015. The elevation from a department inside a force to an arm reporting to the Central Military Commission is the change worth recording; the underlying organisation is largely continuous. Its relevance to this module is the layer beneath everything else: maritime surveillance, over-the-horizon targeting support and the communications that make theatre-level joint operations possible all depend on space systems, and separating them from the cyber and information functions they were bundled with is the reorganisation's most legible decision.

Strengths

Direct CMC subordination, a mature launch and tracking infrastructure, and a remit clearly separated from the network and cyber functions it was previously grouped with.

Limitations

The public record covers institutional identity and very little else. Vigil publishes no constellation detail, no capability assessment and no operational claim; older English-language sources that treat "space and cyber" as one Chinese organisation predate this structure and are not reconciled with it here — they are simply not used for post-2024 claims.
