What happened

Lai Ching-te wins the presidency with around 40% of the vote, giving the DPP an unprecedented third consecutive term — while the party loses its legislative majority to a Kuomintang and Taiwan People's Party bloc, producing a divided government.

The split result is the most consequential fact in current Taiwanese politics for this module. Defence budgets, procurement and resilience spending now require agreement between a presidency Beijing refuses to deal with and a legislature that disputes its priorities — making Taiwan's own defence effort a genuine variable rather than an assumption.
