What happened

The last French troops leave Syria on 17 April 1946 after nationalist pressure and British-backed negotiation; the independent republic inherits the Mandate's borders, institutions and divisions.

Independence day remains Syria's national holiday — and the state it created proved unstable within three years, opening the coup era that ended in Baathist rule.
