Broad area of activity
Dutch airspace, with fighters on stand-by for its protection, and the combined Benelux quick-reaction alert that Belgium's air component states is "alternately ensured by Belgium and the Netherlands".
Notable history
Published as "a modern, high-tech armed forces Service that contributes to peace and security on a global basis", the service is organised around an air force headquarters, five named air bases, the Air Operations Control Station at Nieuw Milligen, the Defence Helicopter Command and an Air Force Reserve Group. Its tasks page states that fighter aircraft are on stand-by for the protection of Dutch airspace, that its aircraft and helicopters provide transport and security from the air, and that the service was responsible for the launch of the ministry's own satellite — the space element behind the current name.
Strengths
A published base and unit structure, the helicopter lift that makes the army's air-assault brigade an air-manoeuvre formation, and a shared Benelux alert that gives two small air arms one continuous airspace task.
Limitations
The pages publish names and roles, not aircraft numbers, alert postures or deployments, and the Benelux arrangement is stated on the Belgian side rather than the Dutch pages fetched. Nothing about contributions to allied air policing on the flank is authored from these sources.
