Battlefield role
Air superiority, strike and the sensor node of the allied air picture: a low-observable fighter whose value in this module lies less in any single mission than in the common fleet, common training and common logistics it creates across the northern and eastern flank.
Strengths
A common type across nine flank states, which turns air policing, cross-servicing and reinforcement into an exercise in the same aircraft; sensors and networking that make each aircraft a contributor to the allied air picture; and a production line whose scale no European fighter matches.
Limitations
A single US supply chain for spares, software and weapons, which the module's states accepted with their eyes open and which is the standing political question about the fleet; deliveries running years behind the formations that want them, so that Poland, Finland, Germany, Czechia and Romania are operating transitional fleets through the decade. Numbers in service, bases and readiness are not recorded.
Visual identification
A single-engine fighter with a broad, faceted fuselage, canted twin fins, diamond-shaped wings and no external stores in the low-observable configuration; the wide nose and the absence of a visible engine intake lip separate it from the F-16 and the Typhoon.
Documented conflict use
NATO EASTERN FLANK. Norwegian, Dutch and Danish F-35s have flown Baltic air-policing and enhanced air-policing rotations, and Dutch aircraft were deployed to Poland in 2024–2025 under the Alliance's air-shielding measures; the campaign record (nef-baltic-air-policing) holds rotation history.
