Broad area of activity
Kurzeme, western Latvia, including the Baltic coast and the naval seat at Liepāja; the brigade page does not draw its boundary.
Notable history
Formed on 30 June 1992 as the 4th Kurzeme district brigade, restructured with the rest of the National Guard in 2018 and moved from Liepāja to Kuldīga on 1 September 2018. Its page publishes its tasks in training terms — battalion training plans, instruction of soldiers, guardsmen and candidates, infantry training for security and defence operations — which is a description of a force-generation role for the region rather than of a manoeuvre formation.
Strengths
The territorial brigade of the coast and of the naval base region, with five published battalions and a published training mandate. Kurzeme is the part of Latvia that reinforcement by sea would reach first, which gives a territorial force there a role that the brigade page does not spell out but the geography does.
Limitations
The brigade publishes battalions, a seat and a commander and no more; strength is published and deliberately not carried, and readiness, equipment and any coastal-defence task shared with the Naval Forces are not published.
