Summary

Acceded on 4 April 2023, ending a policy of military non-alignment held since 1945 and adding the alliance’s longest land border with Russia. Membership carries the mutual-defence commitment of Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty, under which an armed attack against one ally is treated as an attack against them all. Finland hosts the ninth and newest battlegroup, established in June 2026 under Swedish framework leadership. This record states the membership and its date; it says nothing about how much this state spends, what it contributes, or how reliable any party considers it — none of which membership establishes.

Why it matters

The membership set is the backbone of this module: every forward deployment, every command arrangement and every reinforcement plan in the theatre exists because of who is inside this treaty and who is not. Reading the accession dates in order also explains the theatre's shape — the states that joined in 1999 and 2004 are the ones the forward presence now sits in, and the two newest accessions closed the Baltic and the northern land border.
