Finland accedes to the Alliance — Key Events — NATO Eastern Flank

What happened

After all Allies ratify its accession protocol, Finland joins NATO as its 31st member, on the seventy-fourth anniversary of the treaty's signature.

Finnish accession more than doubled the length of NATO's land border with Russia and made the Gulf of Finland an alliance waterway on both shores. The module's northern arena, the land-component command at Mikkeli, the ninth battlegroup and the Baltic Sea's changed maritime geography all follow from it.
