NATO establishes the ninth battlegroup, in Finland — Key Events — NATO Eastern Flank

What happened

NATO establishes Forward Land Forces Finland, the Alliance's ninth multinational battlegroup, led by framework nation Sweden, to enhance deterrence and defence along the north-eastern flank. NATO publishes Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Norway and the United Kingdom as contributing nations. NATO publishes no garrison, lead unit or headquarters for it; the Swedish Armed Forces state that its headquarters is at Rovaniemi and that Sweden's contribution, a battalion battle group based at Boden, has been under NATO command since 6 June.

The ninth formation completes the forward-presence architecture along the whole flank and closes the circle opened by the 2022 applications: one new member now frames a presence in another. Its headquarters seat is published by the framework nation rather than by NATO, and no lead unit designation is published by either.
