What happened
At the Ankara summit on 8 July 2026 Allies updated the operational plan for NATO's integrated air and missile defence and agreed to upgrade Air Policing into a broader air defence posture. In the Baltic states the air defence mission replaced Baltic Air Policing on 1 August 2026, the Estonian Defence Forces state, ending more than 22 years of the air-policing form. NATO says Air Policing was oriented to threats from aircraft, intercepted by fighters, and that Air Defence adds sea- and surface-based air and missile defence and counter-drone systems against crewed and uncrewed aircraft and cruise missiles. The four-month rotation and the three host bases continue. Estonia's defence minister said SACEUR receives broader authority and pilots certain pre-authorisations, so that downing a drone no longer needs political consultation; NATO has not published the rules.
The module's oldest mission changed form for the first time since 2004 — in its mandate and, by ministers' account, its engagement authority — while its aircraft, bases and rotation stayed. The summit declaration itself does not mention the change; it is documented by NATO's own topic pages and the host states' defence ministries.
