概要
The joint counterterrorism force of the five Sahel states, created in 2017 with French backing and Security Council support but never the funding it needed. Mali quit in May 2022; Burkina Faso and Niger followed in December 2023 and the remaining members dissolved the framework days later — succeeded in practice by AES defence cooperation.

- Border zones of Mauritania, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger and Chad, organised in sectors, with the tri-border Liptako-Gourma as the central one.
- 重要歷史
- The G5 Sahel, a regional framework created in 2014, decided in 2017 to stand up a joint force of battalions contributed by each member to operate in defined border sectors against jihadist groups and organised crime, with France as its sponsor and EUTM Mali mandated to assist it. The Security Council welcomed the force and in December 2017 authorised MINUSMA to provide it logistical and operational support under resolution 2391, but the Chapter VII mandate and UN funding the members wanted were never granted, and the force ran on pledges — much of them from the EU — that arrived late or lapsed. It conducted named operations in the tri-border zone and suffered a 2018 attack on its Sévaré headquarters. Mali's transition withdrew from all G5 bodies on 15 May 2022, accusing the framework of instrumentalisation; Burkina Faso and Niger, under their own juntas, announced on 2 December 2023 that they were leaving the G5 and its joint force, and on 6 December Chad and Mauritania acknowledged the framework's dissolution. The three departing states had already created the Alliance of Sahel States in September 2023, whose unified force is this atlas's successor record in substance if not in law.
- 優勢
- The one regional force with a cross-border legal basis among the five, international political backing, and a sector design that matched the geography of the tri-border insurgency.
- 限制
- A force that depended on external funding it never securely received and on a French sponsorship its members came to reject; national contingents that answered to their own commands; and a Security Council that endorsed it without paying for it. Its collapse followed the coups rather than any battlefield defeat, which is the point the AES states made about it. A historical record only.
