Стислий виклад

Russia's 102nd Military Base at Gyumri, near the closed Turkish frontier, is held under a lease agreement extended to 2044. It has not been affected by the realignment around it. Armenia froze its participation in the Russian-led collective security organisation in February 2024, and Russian border guards have left every Armenian checkpoint — Zvartnots in August 2024, the Iranian crossing in January 2025, Margara in March 2025 and Akhurik from the start of 2026. The base remains, and Armenia has not proposed changing the lease. The two halves are the point: Armenia has ended the arrangements it could end by agreement and left untouched the one governed by a lease with eighteen years to run. Vigil publishes nothing about the base beyond its existence, its publicly documented location and its political significance.

Describing Russia as having left Armenia, or as still policing its borders, are both wrong, and this record is what makes the difference legible. It is also the standing reason Armenia's realignment is incremental rather than a rupture: the instrument it has not touched is the one it could not end unilaterally.

• Vigil publishes no strength, disposition, capability or activity for the base, and the absence is structural rather than a gap this record expects to fill.
• Whether the border-guard withdrawal was Armenian-initiated in every case, or agreed on Russian terms in some, is not established by available reporting.

• The retention of the base can be read as a deliberate hedge — an option Armenia preserves against a security environment it cannot otherwise cover — or simply as the arrangement it has no unilateral means to end. Its behaviour, which is to leave the lease unmentioned while ending everything around it, is consistent with both.
