- Created in the 2010 reform that reduced Russia's districts to four, from the North Caucasus district and the Black Sea Fleet's area, and the district from which the 2014 Crimea operation, the Donbas intervention and the 2022 southern axis were staged. Its peacetime armies — the 8th, formed in 2017 around the Donbas separatist corps, and the 58th in the Caucasus — are the formations the module carries beneath it. In 2023 Russia formally assigned the four annexed regions to the district.
