Nature de ce terrain
Flat, open desert giving way to Sahelian scrub, where distance rather than terrain is the obstacle. Three consequences follow: attack reach is not control, the side with the lighter logistics wins the geography, and sanctuary in the Adrar has let northern rebellions recur rather than conclude.

Où les mouvements se concentrent
The junction connecting Gao to Kidal and the far north. In open desert, junctions rather than passes are the constriction, because the constraint is sustainment distance rather than trafficability.
The one road that makes a northern presence sustainable; every force that has held the far north has had to use it.
Border position and airstrip in the far north, strategically prized in every phase of the war precisely because so little else up there can support movement.
Border crossing in the Adrar borderlands, where proximity to Algeria has repeatedly turned local terrain advantage into strategic sanctuary.
Caractère physique
- Terrain dominant
- Sand and rock desert giving way southward to Sahelian scrub. The Adrar des Ifoghas massif in the Kidal region is the one substantial relief feature: a broken granite upland of valleys and caves, historically used as sanctuary and the object of the 2013 French campaign in the north. Elsewhere the ground is overwhelmingly flat and open, with settlement concentrated at water.
- Implications pour la mobilité
- Movement is possible almost anywhere and sustainable almost nowhere. Vehicles can leave the roads freely, which is why the road network confers less advantage here than in the centre and south — but water, fuel and spares cannot be found locally, so range is set by what a column carries. The practical consequence is that light, fast, low-logistics forces operate at an advantage over heavier ones: the pickup and the motorcycle dominate the northern fight not by preference but because the ground rewards them. Open terrain also gives long fields of view and no cover, which is why air power and drones have been decisive here and why forces on both sides disperse.
- Contraintes saisonnières
- Heat is the year-round constraint, with the hottest months around April to June limiting sustained daytime activity and increasing water demand. The harmattan carries dust that degrades visibility and, with it, the aerial surveillance and strike advantage that otherwise favours state forces. The short rains, roughly June to September, are far lighter than in the centre and south but can still make wadis briefly impassable. Seasonality here constrains endurance rather than trafficability — the opposite of the delta.
- Eau et obstacles naturels
- There are no significant natural barriers, and that is the point: the Mali–Algeria border is a line on a map across open desert, not a feature on the ground. Water is the real terrain. Wells and seasonal watercourses fix where people, herds and columns can go, and control of settlement means control of water more than control of ground.
- Urbanisation et peuplement
- Very low. Population concentrates in a small number of towns — Gao, Kidal, Ménaka, Anéfis, Tessalit, Aguelhok — separated by hundreds of kilometres of empty space. This is why the northern war produces sieges of individual towns and contests over the roads between them rather than continuous front lines, and why the module deliberately publishes no front line for Mali: there is nothing continuous to draw.
Portée opérationnelle générale
The northern terrain explains three durable features of this conflict. First, attack reach is not control: a force can cross this ground almost at will and still hold nothing, which is why the module grades Mali's zones as influence and activity rather than territory. Second, the side with less logistics wins the geography — insurgent and separatist mobility is cheap, state and Russian mobility is expensive, and distance charges both by the kilometre. Third, sanctuary matters more than depth: the Adrar and the Algerian borderlands have absorbed defeated forces in every phase since 1962, which is why northern rebellions have recurred rather than concluded.
Observé
Thirteen years of documented fighting in this belt has consistently produced sieges of individual towns, convoy interdiction on the connecting roads, and dispersal under air observation — from Serval in 2013 through Tinzaouatène in 2024 to Anéfis in July 2026.
Évalué
These are terrain effects rather than doctrinal choices: forces with very different objectives and organisation have converged on the same operating pattern here, which is the signature of ground constraining behaviour rather than preference.

Pertinence pour les campagnes
Ce qui reste inconnu
- Water-point and well distribution is the terrain factor that most shapes movement here and the one Vigil does not publish, deliberately: it is precisely the class of detail that would make this record operationally useful rather than explanatory.
- Assessments of how terrain shaped specific engagements rest on after-action reporting of varying quality; the general pattern is well established, the engagement-level detail often is not.
La poussière et l’avantage de la surveillance
Harmattan periods degrade the aerial observation and strike edge that otherwise favours state forces — a seasonal, recurring shift in the balance rather than a change in capability.
Si la géographie des sanctuaires change sur le plan politique
The Mali–Algeria reset of July 2026 is a political change to a terrain fact: border dynamics around Tinzaouatène matter more than any feature of the ground itself.
