Niger's membership of ECOWAS, ended with the collective AES withdrawal completed in January 2025. The exit followed the bloc's response to the July 2023 coup, and left Niger without institutional standing over the corridor states its trade depends on.

ECOWAS formerly had as a member Niger — CNSP Transitional Authorities. A directional arrangement: the two parties do not hold the same position in it. Authored once and read from both ends.

Synthèse

Niger completed its withdrawal from ECOWAS alongside Mali and Burkina Faso in January 2025, following the bloc's response to the July 2023 coup that brought the CNSP to power. What ended was membership — a vote on the rules, the dispute-settlement machinery and the standing to shape a market the country still depends on. ECOWAS said it would keep the free trade zone in place until further notice, and citizens of the three states continue to enjoy visa-free movement, residence and establishment across the bloc. Niger's position is the sharpest of the three: its principal import route has been closed by a bilateral political dispute since July 2023 and only partly replaced since, so it lost its institutional recourse over corridor access at the same time as the access itself.

Pourquoi c’est important

Niger is the case where the exit and the corridor closure compound each other. A landlocked state whose main route to the sea is shut by a neighbour's political decision has an obvious forum in which to contest it, and the withdrawal removed Niger's standing in exactly that forum.

Ce qui reste inconnu

  • `validFrom` is 1975, the founding of ECOWAS, and is context rather than a date this module establishes. The load-bearing date is the January 2025 withdrawal.
  • This module carries no dated event record for the withdrawal; the date comes from the ECOWAS and AES actor records.
  • This module's Niger lens is a baseline rather than a depth. The relationship between the 2023 sanctions, the border closure and the withdrawal decision is not established in detail here.
