Synthèse

Burkina Faso completed its withdrawal from ECOWAS alongside Mali and Niger in January 2025, in what the bloc's own record calls the largest rupture in its fifty-year history. What ended was membership: a vote on the rules, the dispute-settlement machinery, and the institutional standing to shape a market the country still depends on. ECOWAS said it would keep the free trade zone in place until further notice, and citizens of the three states continue to enjoy visa-free movement, residence and establishment across the bloc. Analysts warn that the split has created a cooperation vacuum along shared borders that benefits armed groups and complicates formal cross-border trade — a cost Burkina Faso is more exposed to than either of the others, because all four of its import corridors run through ECOWAS states.
