Main battle tank

K2 Black Panther

The South Korean tank Poland chose in 2022 when European production could not deliver at the speed Warsaw wanted — the largest single armour programme on the flank and the one that made Poland's army the Alliance's biggest tank operator in Europe.

AssessmentHigh confidence

Recognition context, not a stat sheet. The catalogue covers major publicly documented systems relevant to the conflicts Vigil covers — not an exhaustive order of battle. No quantities, availability or current allocations are recorded.

The record What this system is, where it comes from, who operates it and which of Vigil’s modules it is relevant to — with the evidence each of those rests on.

Conflict relevance

This is the catalogue's single record for this system. It is relevant to the module below; each module's Force Atlas shows how it is used there.

Operators

Poland and the eastern flank: The only operator in the module. A framework agreement of July 2022 for up to 1,000 tanks; a first executive contract for 180 K2GF the same month, delivered from December 2022 and completed in 2025; a second executive contract of 1 August 2025 for 180 more — 116 K2GF and 64 K2PL — with the K2PL to be assembled in Poland; and an April 2026 agreement on domestic production. The Polish Land Forces name the type on their own equipment page. Programme facts only.

Battlefield role

Main battle tank for the divisions Poland is building on its eastern border; in the module's terms, the system through which the armour-recapitalisation economy object reads the difference between a supplier that delivers within months and suppliers that deliver within a decade.

Strengths

Delivery speed — the first tanks arrived five months after signature — and a modern design with an autoloader, a three-man crew and a hydropneumatic suspension; the K2PL adds an active protection system and a counter-drone fit, and the domestic assembly line gives Poland a tank industry the Leopard purchases did not.

Limitations

A fleet of two configurations from a supplier outside the European logistics and ammunition networks, which is why the K2PL standard and the Polish production line matter as much as the tank; the 64 K2PL are a 2028–2030 delivery, so the fleet fielded through the decade is the gap-filler configuration. No holdings or unit assignments are recorded.

Visual identification

A low, angular turret with a long 120 mm L/55 gun, a wedge-shaped front, six road wheels and a prominent commander's panoramic sight on the right of the turret; the K2PL is expected to show added turret armour and launcher modules.

Documented conflict use

NATO EASTERN FLANK. Deliveries documented at ministry ceremonies from December 2022 and the completion of the first 180 in 2025; the second executive contract of 1 August 2025 and the April 2026 domestic production agreement are the module's programme milestones. Exercise participation is reported; no operational employment exists. No numbers in service, bases or unit assignments are stated.
