What happened

PRC artillery begins an intense bombardment of Kinmen; the United States supports resupply of the islands without directly entering combat. The confrontation settles into a ritualised, alternating-day shelling that continued in reduced form for two decades.

The 1958 crisis is the clearest historical demonstration of pressure as a long-running condition rather than an event — a confrontation that became routine and was sustained for twenty years. That is the closest historical analogue to today's grey-zone activity, and the reason Kinmen remains the module's reference point.
