In brief
The naval service, operating in the Gulf of Finland and the northern Baltic under three statutory tasks. It publishes a Navy Command, a Coastal Fleet, two coastal brigades and an academy by name in English; those formations are unauthored pending a deliberate pass, and nothing below them is published.

- Broad area of activity
- Finland’s territorial waters and sea lines of communication. The Navy states three statutory tasks — surveillance of territorial waters, repelling territorial violations and maritime attacks, and protecting sea lines of communication — and describes continuous surveillance and standby throughout the year.
- Notable history
- The Navy’s published shape — a Navy Command, a Coastal Fleet, two coastal brigades and an academy — is that of a coastal-defence force built for an archipelago and a narrow gulf, and it was not reorganised by accession in 2023. What changed is the sea around it: with Sweden’s accession in March 2024 the Baltic lost its last non-allied coastline, and a Finnish navy whose statutory task is protecting sea lines of communication now does so as part of an alliance that surrounds the gulf’s northern and western shores.
- Strengths
- A mandate written for exactly this geography. The Navy publishes its capabilities in structural terms — surface warfare, mine operations, coastal mobility and fire support, anti-submarine warfare, naval surveillance — and its combination of a fleet with coastal brigades is the organisational expression of defending an archipelago rather than an open sea.
- Limitations
- The service publishes formations but nothing beneath them: no vessel list by unit, no squadron structure, no readiness. The Squadron 2020 programme is published as an acquisition, not as a delivered order of battle, and this record does not date it. The Navy’s relationship to the alliance’s maritime command arrangements is not described on its own page and is not inferred here.
