Latvia becomes the first host to scale up to a brigade — Key Events — NATO Eastern Flank

What happened

NATO Multinational Brigade Latvia is stood up with Canada as framework nation, making Latvia the first country to scale its NATO forward presence to a brigade. In October 2024 the multinational battlegroup is transferred from the Latvian Mechanized Infantry Brigade to the new formation. NATO states that Canada plans to complete the full implementation of persistently deployed brigade capabilities by 2026, at which point up to 2,200 Canadian troops will be stationed in the multinational brigade.

Latvia is the module's worked example of designation and scale being separate facts: the formation is brigade-scale and carries a brigade designation, and NATO still calls all nine forward formations battlegroups regardless of size. The October transfer is also the only published case of a forward formation moving between host and multinational command.
