- The whole of Denmark, on land, at sea and in the air through its three guards. The Home Guard states that its principal object is to support the armed forces in training, exercises and deployments, that it also supports the police and the customs and tax authorities, and that it provides host-nation support to allied forces and materiel transiting Denmark.

- The Home Guard is the institutional form of Danish total defence, a volunteer force whose members serve unpaid, published not as a branch of the armed forces but as a separate agency under the ministry with its own command and its own commissioner for recruitment. Its accession-era relevance is the transit role: the alliance’s reinforcement of the Baltic states and the Nordic north crosses Danish territory and waters, and the Home Guard states in its own words that it supports allied forces and material transit through Denmark.
