廣泛活動地區
An area the command itself calls very large: from the waters around the Faroes in the east across the Greenland Sea and the Arctic Ocean, the Denmark Strait and the Irminger Sea to the Davis Strait and Baffin Bay between Canada and Greenland. Its primary published tasks are maritime surveillance and the assertion of sovereignty, with fisheries inspection, search and rescue, hydrography, pollution response and support to science and civil society alongside.
重要歷史
Greenland Command dates from 1951, when Denmark took over Grønnedal after the Danish–American defence agreement for Greenland, and its commander held the alliance role of Island Commander Greenland; the Faroe Islands Command followed in 1961. On 31 October 2012 the two were merged as Joint Arctic Command, the old headquarters at Grønnedal and Mørkedal closed, and the joint command took its seat at Nuuk with a liaison element beside the maritime rescue centre in Tórshavn. The armed forces’ own ten-year retrospective records that the merged headquarters began far smaller than its predecessors and has grown since.
優勢
A published, standing, joint owner for the Kingdom’s North Atlantic. In a module whose northern half is defined by sea lines, undersea infrastructure and the Greenland–Iceland–United Kingdom gap, the fact that an allied state has one command seated in Greenland with a published area and tasks is the structural asset; the Navy states it is present there with ships through the year.
限制
A sovereignty and surveillance command, not a fighting formation. It publishes no internal structure, its ships and aircraft are provided by the services and rotate, and the Sirius patrol that maintains presence in north-east Greenland is published under Special Operations Command, not here. The Arctic measures of the current agreement are plans with dates, and neither their state nor any deployment is carried.
