The land the front runs through is agricultural and inhabited. The Donbas belt combines farmland with a continuous chain of settlements; the southern steppe is among the most productive arable land in Europe. Three civilian exposures follow. Casualties among returning civilians and farmers are the direct one, and they continue after fighting has moved away. Agricultural land is withdrawn from use — not because it is damaged but because it cannot be worked safely, which converts a security problem into a rural income problem across whole districts.
