NATO is central to this war and is not fighting it. Its coordination structures organise a large part of the assistance effort, its members supply Ukraine bilaterally or through coalitions, and Ukrainian forces have been trained to alliance standards — but the alliance does not supply weapons as an alliance, does not finance Ukraine at any meaningful scale, and extends no defence commitment. Ukraine's membership status is a declared eventual path without a date and without an invitation, a formula both sides describe as deliberately unresolvable: an invitation would import an active war into Article 5, and a refusal would concede a Russian war aim.
