- Announced in Pau in January 2020 as France sought to Europeanise the Sahel effort, Takuba was established on 27 March 2020 by a joint declaration of European defence ministers and placed under French command inside Barkhane. Its task was narrower than the parent operation's: small teams of European special forces advising, assisting and accompanying Malian light reconnaissance units in combat, so that the Malian army rather than the French would hold the Liptako. It reached initial operating capability in July 2020 with Estonian and Czech teams beside the French, added Swedish, Italian, Danish, Portuguese, Hungarian and other contributions, and by early 2022 counted around nine hundred personnel, nearly half French. The transition's refusal of an electoral timetable, its expulsion of the French ambassador, its demand that Danish troops leave and its turn to Wagner ended the premise: France announced the withdrawal in February 2022 and the task force ended its mission on 30 June 2022 as Barkhane left Mali.
