- The Saudi navy is organised around a fact of geography no other Gulf navy shares: the kingdom has two coasts, and its export system uses both. The Eastern Fleet at the King Abdulaziz Naval Base at Jubail covers the Gulf, where Ras Tanura and the offshore fields sit; the Western Fleet at the King Faisal Naval Base at Jeddah covers the Red Sea, where the East–West pipeline's outlet at Yanbu is the kingdom's alternative to Hormuz. The service comprises the two fleets, a naval aviation group, marine infantry and naval special security units, and it has been re-equipping its Western Fleet with new frigates and corvettes through the 2020s. The Houthi blockade of Saudi ports at Bab el-Mandeb in July 2026 made the Western Fleet's sea the one where the kingdom's escape route from the strait is contested — which is why this module treats the two fleets as two different problems.
